I'm thrilled to have won a CIDA funded, AUCC managed, Students for Development (SFD) internship grant. This means that after TAing an amazing summer class "Visualizing Ourselves, Visualizing Others: Media, Representation and Culture" with Marc Lafleur, I have the opportunity to spend three months (June - September 2011) in Guyana interning at the Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB).
The GRDB is a national organization that unites farmers, millers and other stakeholders in the Guyana rice industry. The GRDB's main objectives include:
(a) developing the rice industry in Guyana and expanding its export trade
(b) engaging in promotional and developmental activities
(c) establishing facilities for the conduct of research, relating to rice and transferring new technology and farming practices to rice farmers.
The objectives and activities I'll be engaged in include: conducting archival research, developing a proposal to consider alternative uses for rice waste and conducting research on existing extension education. This internship is an excellent opportunity for me to meet farmers and other stakeholders in Guyana's rice industry and to learn about rice cultivation in Guyana! Thank you SFD & GRDB!
